Advancing the Critical Action conversation

Jan 16, 2011 in  Bandung, Indonesia

The strategic development session noted in the previous blog went well.

Vision, strategic goals, force field analysis, milestones, and starting action steps were all identified and recorded at the large group level. There were nearly 100 in the room. What became quickly apparent is that 100 is too big a group to facilitate near personal critical actions (ca’s).

  1. The “ca” conversation was started though.
  2. A metaphor to understand ca’s was drawn using an exercise.
  3. The identification of the ca’s will need to wait for another day.

I found the specific challenge to be the coincidence of new strategic goals/plans and working to identify relevant personal ca’s. High performance strategic goals 10 years out are quite difficult for many people to get their arms around. Though the strategic goals were identified, I am sure for many, those goals were more just words than a goal that was personally understood and embraced. From this level of understanding of the goals/plans, figuring individual ca’s in the group of 100 would have been nearly impossible.

The way I will work around this impasse is to have the group begin the action steps and facilitate the ca’s from there. The conversation will connect current action with desire impacts and through questions isolate ca’s that will move next action steps closer to the desired impacts.

I am reminded of the segment in “Apollo 13” when the nature of the disaster was clearly understood: they needed to scrub the atmosphere of CO2 or they would die. Tom Hanks, as Neal Armstrong, needed to draw everyone’s attention to a few specific ca’s. If the atmosphere was not scrubbed of CO2 they would die. Nothing else matters. That is what ca’s are.

The next session with another group starts Monday.  I will see if we can get closer to identification of ca’s with this group.
